about

Recorded live at Cafe Istanbul.

Sound engineer and Production by Drew Mosby. Co-Pro Dennis Kyne

Featuring the one and only Roger Lewis, 2023 Grammy with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, on Baritone. Grammy award winning Craig Klein on Trombone, The Steve Lands on Trumpet. The King of Treme, Shannon Powell on Drums and the legendary Mark Brooks on Bass. Assembled and brought together by Eddie Gale's guitar player, Dennis Kyne on guitar and Music Director.

It all came together as Dennis decided to put together a Krewe to celebrate Eddie's birthday with a release of some of his favorite themes.

Shannon and Dennis had walked in the Jazz Funeral for Democracy in 2005, before Katrina rolled over the city. Craig and Dennis became friends and allies' days after Katrina Hit when they met in his front yard on a drive over with the legendary Shiek. Sheik, Armand Richardson, a photojournalist, with Craig and Bill started the Arabi Wrecking Krewe on that day.

Craig introduced Mark and Dennis may years ago, then in the run up the date, gave Dennis both Roger and Steve's phone numbers and the session was set.

In a collaboration with one another, you will hear, COMPOSITION done in the moment. One of Eddie's favorite things was to allow the song to become whatever it would be, from the participation of the band. He would say, Jazz is a democracy, everyone has a voice. There is an improvisational set up that Dennis altered for this recording though. In real time Eddie Gale, ala Ornette Coleman, Eddie would just gesture towards you, and it was your turn to solo and improvise, preferably off the melody line, but not required. For this recording Everyone saw their solo coming and did not have to move through the energy of that "surprise"

You catch all the history of and styles of Jazz on this one.
Roger Lewis who toured with Fats Domino, brings Bebop and Big Brass like no other.
The vocal soloing over some of the most Socratic bass lines ever were laid down by Mark Brooks.
Craig Klein gives up his soul on Children of Peace, which Dennis asked him too really bring it on. If you see his recent work with the children in France, you will see what I mean.
Shannon Powell brought some beats and pulses and tambourines to the set that you can't even identify. Like a Treme second line rhythm you might only hear on that one Sunday you are on the streets. (Listen to Love is ALL)

The session was set for 5 songs. Raw Creation off melody lines. One vamp WORKSHOP was a theme Eddie called on Dennis to bring up when they had new students, apprentice artists, guest players, in his workshops or rehearsals. Workshop has a turnaround in it. The collaborative played it again without the Turn around and it became Four hours later. Steve Lands got the call four hours before the session to be on it. Showed up never seeing the sheets, never rehearsing...... and the session took on Eddie's Favorite energy. Spiritual. To close out the Bebop, the free, the Avant the melody lines, the pulses..... Steve and his Trumpet brought the angels. Eddie always told Dennis, "The bible mentions the trumpet 33 or more times" The Steve Lands blew on Four Hours Later like the wind.

I am so happy became Brass Happy, when Shannon Powell set it up New Orleans style and the brass gave it an intro that made the theme go to another planet.
And as Master Sun Ra always said to Eddie, "There are planets they have not told you about yet."
you will enjoy this planet at Cafe Istanbul for sure.
